THE HAMPSHIRE EX-SERVICEMEN'S CONCERT BAND INFORMATION FOR POTENTIAL MEMBERS
THE BAND. Formed in November 1993 with the object of keeping alive the high standards and traditions of British Military Music now sadly decimated by the wholesale disbandment of bands within the three services.
THE MUSICIANS. The members of the band are mainly ex-service personnel drawn from the bands of the Royal Marines, Royal Air Force and from many famous Regiments and Corps of the Army. Also a number of civilian musicians have been welcomed into the band to fill vacant positions.
THE REPERTOIRE. The bands repertoire embraces the whole range of music played to-day in the modern Military/Wind band and includes classical, light classical scores, music from West End and Broadway shows, popular light music and the featuring of many fine soloists from within the ranks of the band.
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. With the exception of some percussion instruments and certain specialised instruments band members provide their own.
PLAYING OUT DRESS. At the first meeting of the founding band members it was agreed that the dress for engagements would be Regimental/Corps blazer, (black, blue or Green) white shirt, Regimental/Corps tie, dark slacks, black socks, black shoes. Ladies are requested to wear dark skirts or slacks and white blouses with dark cardigan/jumper in cold weather.
PRACTICE FACILITIES. We are extremely fortunate to be allowed to use the practice room of the Light Division Band at Sir John Moore Barracks, Andover Road North (B3420), Winchester ( SO22 6NQ ) on Monday evenings 20.00 to 22.00. A list of members and their addresses is deposited in the guardroom each week. Members may be asked to produce proof of identification such as a driving licence to ensure entry.
PRACTICE SESSIONS. Members should be fixed up and ready for the down beat at 20.00 Details of practice sessions.
ORGANISATION. The band decided on the first meeting that a committee was not required and that the running of the band would be left in the hands of the Director of Music who would be assisted by a Deputy Conductor and Treasurer.
MEMBERS. Individual members whose first call is with other musical organisations put in what time they can with the band as well as a core of members whose first call is with this band. There is never any compusion to members or pressure brought but is is requested that members scan the Engagement Lists and inform the Director of Music if they cannot perform at any time. This is most important so that time is allowed to book suitable replacements.
EXPENSES. A small allowance will be paid to members using their own transport to and from engagements. Members are requested to consider offering lifts to other members wherever possible in order to reduce the number of cars proceeding to engagements.
